I have friends that embrace their children’s spirituality by meditating with them for 15 minutes every night.
When doing chores, such as picking up toys or putting away the dishes imagine that you are returning these things to their homes where they will be comfortable. Reframing chores in this way teaches children respect for their surroundings, kindness, and nurturing.
At bedtime, identify one good thing and one bad thing that happened during the day. For children, these are times to practice enthusiasm and forgiveness. For parents, these are opportunities to practice openness and listening.
Help your child learn the joy of gratification and contribution. "Gratitude unlocks the fullness of life. It turns what we have into enough, and more. It turns denial into acceptance, chaos to order, confusion to clarity. It can turn a meal into a feast, a house into a home, a stranger into a friend. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow." ~ Melody Beattie
Some children can differentiate between what it means to "go to a place of worship" regularly versus "believing in a higher power that watches over me." Such a conceptual difference is one that many adults today have trouble with separating.
Studies have been conducted in relation to a child’s sense of happiness. A child’s sense of happiness originates from many areas. Spirituality actually accounts for up to 17 percent of a child's sense of happiness. Whereas money, gender or a parent's marital status does not even register 1 percent. The child’s spiritual belief may simply mean believing in a "higher power."
Children want to be happy. Parents want to raise happy children. Being able to foster a child's sense of happiness from an imaginative and scientific standpoint is making significant progress in this world. It enables us as leading-edge parents, educators, and creators to craft programs that "plant the seeds" of lasting happiness in children.
